Stanley Yelnats is falsely accused of stealing a pair of running shoes. To serve his sentence, the teenager is offered a stay in a labor camp dubbed Green Lake, although it is located in the middle of the desert.

All the young boarders have to dig very deep holes under the orders of the mysterious director and her two tyrannical assistants, Mr. Sir and Mr. Pendanski. Stanley learns the secret purpose of the director: to discover a treasure hidden long ago by a famous lawless adventurer, Kissin 'Kate Barlow.

Unable to support the camp's living conditions further, Zero decides to flee. Fearing for the life of this boy who became his best friend, Stanley goes looking for him. Their departure will cause many disturbances to the camp.
