La forme passive en anglais se forme ainsi dans ton  cas (passé)  :

be au prétérit  + participe passé 

 1/In Africa

the slaves were sent by ship in other countries

the slaves were chained to avoid their escape

the slaves were captured if they tried to escape

the slaves were crowded in ship. Most of them died during the trip

2/In America

the slaves were branded like the cattle

the slaves were forced to work like beasts

the slaves were bargained, because they were not considered like human being

At their arrival in other countries, they were inspected to be sure they were in a good sick

3/ Corporal punishments

The slaves were whipped for any reasons

The slave women were raped in front of their husband

The slaves were hung without real reasons

The slaves were mistreated,most often just to scare the rest of the slaves
